Seven People Trapped in a Mine Explosion in Colombia Found Dead
JAKARTA - Seven miners trapped in a coal mine in La Vega in the Cundinamarca department, Colombia, were killed, according to a report from the local fire service.
The explosion occurred in the Penas de Boqueron area in the city of Sutatausa on Thursday. The next day, the search and rescue operation ended at around 17.00 local time.
The operation involved firefighters, police, civil defense, local government representatives and special personnel from the national mining agency.
"Unfortunately, despite the efforts of the search and rescue team and the special mine rescue unit, these workers were found without any signs of life. A number of technical steps are still being taken to determine the cause of the explosion," said one of the damkar members, Captain Alvaro Farfan, reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Saturday, June 6.
This is the fourth major accident in the Cundinamarca mine since the beginning of the year. According to official data, 26 miners were killed and six others were injured in similar incidents.
