US Democrats Introduce Bill on Use of AI for Military
JAKARTA - Members of the US Democratic Party will introduce a bill (RUU) that regulates the use of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) for military purposes.
The bill, titled "Responsible Artificial Intelligence in Defense Act", will be introduced on June 8 by two senators, Chris Coons and Jack Reed, according to the news portal's report.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Friday, June 5, based on the bill, the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) will be required to ensure that AI systems used for military purposes remain under human supervision and can be manually disabled or taken over.
The provision will remain in place until AI reaches what is referred to as a "reliability threshold."
The bill would also ban mass surveillance of people within the US with the help of AI.
In addition, AI will not be allowed to have the authority to make decisions regarding the launch of nuclear weapons.
According to a report by Axios, lawmakers were prompted to introduce the bill after a dispute arose between the US Department of Defense and Anthropic regarding the use of the company's AI technology in a confidential or high-classification environment.
