Iran Demands US Liquidate 50 Percent of Assets After Signing MoU

JAKARTA - Iran demands that the United States immediately liquidate at least 50 percent of its foreign assets after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU).

"Iran insists that at least 50 percent of frozen assets must be released to Tehran immediately after the memorandum of understanding is signed, with the rest following within a reasonable period of time," Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi was quoted as saying by the Mehr news agency as reported by ANTARA, Friday, June 5.

In May, the Tasnim news agency, citing a source close to Iran's negotiating team, reported that Tehran, in its 14-point settlement proposal, had asked Washington to unfreeze foreign assets worth 24 billion US dollars (about Rp432 trillion): half in the initial phase - once a memorandum of understanding to resolve the conflict - and the rest in the next phase after negotiations on nuclear issues.

The news agency reported the progress of the first phase of the disbursement of the funds.
