Indonesia Open 2026: Jonatan Chistie Bungkam Alwi Farhan
JAKARTA - Men's singles badminton player Jonatan Christie managed to beat Alwi Farhan to reach the 2026 Indonesia Open quarterfinal and keep his record of meeting with his junior clean.
Jonatan, who is the fifth seed in this tournament, lost the first game, but managed to bounce back and close the match with a final score of 17-21, 21-17, and 21-16 at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, on Thursday, June 4, 2026.
"I hope that by advancing to the quarter-finals, yes, hopefully it can go further than the quarter-finals," said Jonatan, who has ambitions to be on the highest podium at the 2026 Indonesia Open.
On the other hand, the defeat against Jonatan was a turning point for Alwi. The 21-year-old badminton player previously managed to reach the semifinals at the 2026 Singapore Open last week. On the way to that stage, he even defeated world number one, Shi Yuqi.
The latest result makes Jonatan now the record-breaking 2-0 win-loss record over Alwi. Previously last year, Jonatan also had to fight three games to beat the 2023 junior world champion in the Korean Open semifinals.
"I think I lost two games earlier. Alwi also played quite well, but I think there is also a factor (Alwi) of fatigue, after yesterday he was at the Singapore Open which was also quite good until the semifinals," said Jonatan.
Indonesia has a total of seven representatives in the quarter-finals out of 11 who fought in the second round of this BWF Super 1000 level event. The other six tickets were won by three women's doubles, two men's doubles, and one women's singles.
Tickets from the women's doubles were bagged by Rachel Allessya Rose/Febi Setianingrum, Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari, and Amallia Cahaya Pratiwi/Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti. Rachel/Febi and Febriana/Meilysa will meet in the quarterfinals so that one semi-final ticket is automatically bagged by Indonesia.
The other three tickets were won by Sabar Karyaman Gutama/Mohammad Reza Pahlevi Isfahani, Raymond Indra/Nikolaus Joaquin, and Putri Kusuma Wardani.
Meanwhile, those who are in the same boat as Alwi are Adnan Maulana/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil, Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah, and Jafar Hidayatullah/Felisha Alberta Nathaniel Pasaribu. The defeat of the three of them made the mixed doubles run out of representatives.
