Meet the Call at Polda Metro Jaya, Saiful Mujani: Critical Voices Silenced
JAKARTA - Political researcher Saiful Mujani fulfilled the call of investigators as a reported witness in the alleged incitement case at the Polda Metro Jaya, Thursday, June 4, 2026. On that occasion, Saiful expressed his concern if the legal process he was going through ended in a silencing of critical voices, which he said could have an impact on academic freedom and democracy.
When he met the public, Saiful was accompanied by a number of figures, including Todung Mulya Lubis, Ray Rangkuti, and Muhammad Isnur.
"Ready to provide clarification for this invitation. Hopefully everything will be clear," said Saiful to reporters at the Polda Metro Jaya, Thursday, June 4, 2026.
When asked about the evidence brought to face the examination, Saiful answered briefly.
"The proof is in everyone's head," he said.
Saiful emphasized that from the beginning he was ready to meet the call of law enforcement officers if his testimony was needed in the investigation process.
"If you need information from me or anything else, you call the authorities, I will definitely come. And I am here now to meet the police," he said.
However, Saiful admitted that he was worried if the legal process that was running was related to the statements he had made to the public. According to him, this issue not only concerns him personally, but also academic freedom and criticism in the community.
"What I am very worried about is if the critical voice is silenced. This is not about me, but about our community as academics, public intellectuals, and activists who have a commitment to national values," he said.
Saiful hopes that the ongoing process can be a test for the nation's commitment to democratic values and civil liberties.
"Today we will carry it out. Do we still value freedom of speech, freedom of criticism, and democracy in general," he concluded.
Polda Metro Jaya, previously received four police reports filed by Robina Akbar, Charles Gilbert, Muhammad Fadli, and Rafli Maulana Nasyari in April 2026.
The reporters questioned the statements of State Law Observer Feri Amsari and Saiful Mujani in the Halalbihalal forum entitled "Before the Observer is Disciplined" which was held in the Utan Kayu Utara area, Matraman, East Jakarta, on March 31, 2026. In the report, the two were suspected of violating Article 246 of the Criminal Code.
