Typhoon Jangmi Kills 23 People, Thousands of Schools in Japan are Destroyed
JAKARTA - Typhoon Jangmi injured 23 people, one of whom was in critical condition, as the tropical storm moved quickly from southwest to northeast Japan.
The typhoon hit Okinawa before moving north. The prefecture in the southern region recorded the highest number of injured, with 17 people affected, according to data from the Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Reported by ANTARA from Kyodo, Wednesday, June 3, the Japanese Ministry of Education and Science stated that teaching and learning activities had been canceled at 5,378 city schools and institutions spread across 23 of a total of 47 prefectures in Japan.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the storm was reported to have begun moving away from the coast of Chiba Prefecture towards the Pacific Ocean.
The air pressure at the center of the typhoon was recorded at 985 hektopascals, with wind speeds at the center of the storm reaching 25 meters per second and gust winds reaching up to 35 meters per second.
