Pelni prepares 8 passenger ships ahead of holidays in Papua

JAKARTA - PT Pelayaran Nasional Indonesia (Pelni) Jayapura Branch has prepared eight passenger ships to anticipate an increase in community mobility during the school holidays and a number of religious agendas that will take place from June to July.

Head of Pelni's Jayapura Branch, Daulat Apul Gervasius Naibaho, said his party estimated that the number of passengers who would depart through the Jayapura Port was around 10,000 people.

"We estimate that the number of passengers during the school holidays will reach around 10,000 people so that this time we have prepared eight ships so that the service to the public continues to run well," he said as quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, June 3.

According to Daulat, fleet readiness not only includes the technical condition of the ship, but also supporting facilities and safety equipment that must be available during navigation.

"In addition, we are also coordinating with regulators and port authorities to ensure that all ships operate in accordance with safety and security standards for shipping," he said.

He explained that passenger trends began to increase since May 2026 after experiencing a decline in April.

"Entering June, ticket demand continues to increase as the school holidays begin. And there are a number of groups who have booked tickets far in advance, including religious activities. This is one indicator of an increase in the number of passengers during this year's holiday season," said Daulat.

He added that the average number of passengers departing from Jayapura over the past few months ranged from 1,000 to 1,300 people per departure.

However, this figure is expected to increase during the peak holiday period.

"To maintain security and comfort during the journey, Pelni also tightened supervision of passengers' luggage. We also appeal to the public not to bring liquor, sharp weapons, or other prohibited items on board," he said.
