Jonatan and Alwi meet in the second round of the 2026 Indonesia Open
JAKARTA - One of the men's singles badminton players, Jonatan Christie and Alwi Farhan, is certain to be eliminated in the second round of the 2026 Indonesia Open after the two of them compactly passed the first round of the tournament and immediately met.
Some of the first-round matches from the BWF Super 1000-level event, which took place at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, were completed on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, WIB evening. Of the 11 Indonesian representatives who fought first, seven of them managed to pass the test.
Jonatan is the first Indonesian representative to continue his journey to the second round. He performed solidly to defeat the Singaporean representative, Jia Heng Jason Teh, in a two-game match that ended with 21-18 and 21-15.
Alwi also played in a two-game match against Lakshya Sen from India. The semifinals at the 2026 Singapore Open last week closed Sen's fight with a score of 21-19 and 21-16 to ensure the meeting against Jonatan.
The second clash between Jonatan and Alwi in the second round automatically made Indonesia already have one ticket to the last eight. Unfortunately, in this year's Indonesia Open, only the two of them were sent down to represent the men's singles.
In addition to the two names above, the second round tickets were also obtained by Putri Kusuma Wardani. Putri, as the only female singles representative, managed to maintain her dream in this tournament after defeating Sung Shuo Yun from China Taipei in two games 21-13 and 21-14.
The victory was also achieved by the women's doubles sector through the pair of Febriana Dwipuji Kusuma/Meilysa Trias Puspitasari. They managed to eliminate the Indian pair, Treesa Jolly/Gayatri Gopichand Pullela, through a convincing victory in two straight games 21-14 and 21-12.
Still from the same number, the pair of Rachel Allesya Rose/Febi Setianingrum also managed to survive in the tournament after winning the duel against fellow Indonesian representatives against Isyana Syahira Meida/Rinjani Kwinnara Nastine. Rachel/Febi secured the ticket to the second round after winning 22-20 and 21-17.
In the mixed doubles sector, Adnan Maulana/Indah Cahya Sari Jamil also managed to continue their journey to the second round. They bounced back after losing the first game to beat the French pair, Julien Maio/Lea Palermo, with a score of 14-21, 21-19, and 21-11.
Another positive result was recorded by Amri Syahnawi/Nita Violina Marwah. The Indonesian pair defeated the United States representative, Presley Smith/Jennie Gai, in two straight games 21-19 and 21-13 to secure a place in the second round.
Meanwhile, one of the other three Indonesian representatives who were eliminated was the men's doubles Leo Rolly Carnando/Daniel Marthin. The pair failed to advance after losing to Lee Jhe Huei/Yang Po Hsuan (China Taipei) in a three-game match 16-21, 21-13, and 19-21.
A similar fate befell the mixed doubles pair of Dejan Ferdinansyah/Bernadine Anindya Wardana. They were unable to stop the Chinese pair, Cheng Xing/Zhang Chi, and had to admit their opponent's advantage in the two direct games 10-21 and 9-21.
The defeat was also felt by Bobby Setiabudi/Melati Daeva Oktavianti. The Indonesian pair gave a fierce fight before finally falling to the Chinese Taipei representative, Liu Kuang Heng/Hsu Yin Hui, in a three-game battle with a score of 11-21, 23-21, and 19-21.
Indonesia will likely add tickets to the second round on the second day of the tournament, Wednesday, June 3, 2026. This is because there are still 10 representatives who will fight, including the pair of Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.
