Smart #6 EHD Launches June 11 in China, First PHEV Sedan to Test New

Smart is preparing to enter the sedan segment. The brand, a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely, will launch the Smart #6 EHD in China on June 11, with prices starting at 189,900 yuan or around 28,000 US dollars.

Launching a report from CarNewsChina, quoted Tuesday, June 2, the Smart #6 EHD is Smart's first sedan in the new era of Geely. This car comes as a PHEV or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, which is a hybrid car whose battery can be charged from an external power source.

The Smart #6 EHD uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine and has a pure electric range of up to 285 km based on the CLTC standard, a method of testing vehicle range in China.

This model is important for Smart. So far, its new line has been filled with electric SUVs, such as the Smart #1, #3, and #5. Smart #6 is the first model of the Geely era that has been offered only in PHEV variants since the beginning.

In terms of design, the Smart #6 follows the brand's latest design language. The front is made in harmony with the other Smart family. As a liftback sedan, this car has a large rear window that blends in with the trunk door. There is also an active rear spoiler as an option.

In the cabin, the Smart #6 uses a dual-screen infotainment system like the Smart #5. This car is also equipped with a Sennheiser audio system with a 7.1.4 configuration and a maximum power of 2,000 watts.

For the power plant, the Smart #6 uses the same PHEV system as the Smart #5. The 1.5T engine produces 120 kW or 161 hp. The engine is combined with a special 3-speed hybrid transmission or DHT and an electric motor of 200 kW or 268 hp.

Its total power reaches 320 kW or 429 hp. All variants use front-wheel drive or FWD.

Buyers can choose two LFP batteries. The first option is a 20 kWh battery made by SVOLT with a standard CLTC electric range of 135 km. The second option is a 41 kWh battery made by CATL with an electric range of up to 285 km.

Smart has not released official information on fast charging for #6. However, on Smart #5, a small battery can be charged from 30 percent to 80 percent in 20 minutes. The large battery takes 15 minutes.

Smart claims #6 with a large battery and full gas tank can travel up to 1,810 km. The latest data from China's MIIT mentions a fuel consumption of 4.75-4.79 liters per 100 km when the battery is empty.

On the legs, Smart has not given a full confirmation. However, sources say #6 is likely to use a MacPherson front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension, like Smart #5.

Smart said Mercedes-Benz also tuned the suspension and chassis of this car. Smart #6 is also said to get FSD or frequency-selective dampers, a shock absorber technology that adjusts the braking characteristics according to road conditions.

Performance is also maintained. Smart claims that acceleration from 0-100 km/h can be achieved in 6.7 seconds in the slowest condition, even though the battery is in a low state.

The dimensions are quite large. Smart #6 has a length of 4,906 mm, a width of 1,922 mm, a height of 1,508 mm, and a wheelbase of 2,926 mm. The empty weight ranges from 1,990 to 2,099 kg, depending on the variant.

Smart's challenge is not small. According to China EV Datatracker quoted by CarNewsChina, Smart only sold 1,703 units in China in April 2026. Throughout 2025, sales reached 30,799 units.

Smart had recorded an increase to 3,716 units in December 2025, when subsidies for new energy vehicles began to be partially reduced. However, the general sales trend is still weakening.

Smart has a long history. The brand was born in 1994 through a collaboration between Daimler-Benz and Swatch, then changed in 2019 to a 50:50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely.

The presence of the Smart #6 EHD is Smart's move to expand its product line. However, it remains to be seen whether this model can help Smart grow in China and the global market.
