Previously, Jokowi's presence in the Indonesian political map caused a stir. He was considered successful as a regional head. The narrative made his popularity increase. The problem arose when Jokowi was touted to run for the 2014 presidential election against Prabowo Subianto.
There is no doubt about Jokowi's success as the Mayor of Surakarta in the 2005-2012 era. Jokowi is considered a leader who is skilled in formulating policies and close to the people.
All kinds of criticism and input are given space. The narrative is also supported by Jokowi's teachings of going in and out of the village. He often hears complaints from his citizens. The blusukan style was then famous throughout the country. In fact, many regional heads have started to follow Jokowi's blusukan.
The result is that Jokowi is able to make the best decisions. Jokowi's popularity then increased. Jokowi's figure is almost known throughout Indonesia. The special thing is the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) which is Jokowi's political vehicle since the beginning has seen an opportunity.
Jokowi was advanced by PDIP as a sponsor in the 2012 DKI Jakarta gubernatorial election. Jokowi was paired with the governor from the Gerindra Party, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok). Both parties, PDIP and Gerindra, tried to bear all kinds of campaign costs.
Unlike other candidates who are supported by many parties and large funds. However, Jakarta residents are the ones who decide. Jokowi-Ahok was finally elected as the new Governor and Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta.
The result made Jokowi a durian runtuh. All kinds of his moves are always in the news media. This narrative makes Jokowi's name stronger as a presidential candidate in the 2014 presidential election.
"Jokowi and Basuki may have given hope to Jakarta residents: they will lead the capital more humanely. When leading Solo City, Jokowi is known to be very humanitarian. He, for example, asked the Police Pamong Praja Unit to 'hang' their batons and guns."
"Jokowi is also able to move the market traders' area without turmoil. When he was the Regent of East Belitung, Bangka-Belitung Province, Basuki was also quite down to earth," read the report in Tempo Magazine titled New Governor of Old Jakarta (2012).
The uniqueness of Jokowi then managed to become a presidential candidate in the 2014 presidential election. Jokowi's success then brought a new problem. Jokowi had to fight Prabowo Subianto who was behind the Gerindra's support for him in the DKI Jakarta gubernatorial election.
The relationship between Jokowi and Gerindra is like a crack. Controversy also emerged. Jokowi, while not considering Gerindra's support important and big in the gubernatorial election. The narrative made the Deputy Chairman of the Gerindra Party DPP, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, speak out on June 2, 2014.
Prabowo Subianto's brother considers himself to have been lied to by Jokowi for 1.5 years. He also claims that the majority of Jokowi's campaign funds for Governor of DKI Jakarta came from him. The campaign funds provided amounted to Rp. 52 billion so that Jokowi won the DKI Jakarta gubernatorial election.
"Sorry, I just opened it, I have been lied to by Jokowi for 1.5 years. I have known Jokowi since 2008, who funded Jokowi's campaign (pilgub) was me, ninety percent. I spent Rp. 52 billion," said Hashim as quoted by lamankompas.com, June 2, 2014.
