Waste Sorting Movement Has Not Had a Significant Impact, DKI Government Focuses on System Repair
JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Environmental Service (DLH) admitted that the Waste Sorting from Source Movement which has been running for the last two weeks has not shown a significant impact on reducing the volume of waste to the Bantargebang Landfill.
Head of the DKI Jakarta Environment Service, Dudi Gardesi Asikin, said that the program is currently in the early stages of implementation, namely building people's habits to sort waste from households.
"This waste sorting movement from the source has only been running for about two weeks, so at this time we are still in the stage of consolidating the implementation and collecting data from various regions," Dudi told reporters, Friday, May 29.
According to him, the main focus of the government at this time is not merely to pursue the number of waste reduction, but to ensure that the sorting system runs consistently in the community until the transportation process.
"In this initial phase, our main focus is to build the habit of sorting waste in the community and ensuring that the sorting system runs consistently, from households, neighborhoods, to transportation officers," he said.
The DKI DLH said that the evaluation of the reduction in waste volume is still being carried out. However, the government claims to have begun to see a positive response from the public in a number of areas of Jakarta.
"Although the data on waste reduction is still in the process of monitoring and evaluation, we see a fairly positive response and participation from the community in a number of areas," said Dudi.
This waste sorting program is one of the DKI Provincial Government's efforts to reduce the burden of the Bantargebang Waste Treatment Plant, which has been receiving thousands of tons of Jakarta waste every day. The government hopes that waste reduction can be done from the household level so that mixed waste that is thrown into the final processing site is reduced.
Dudi explained that the period from May to June 2026 is still focused on the socialization and education phase to the public, including the provision of supporting facilities for waste sorting.
"After these stages are carried out, the implementation of waste sorting will be expanded and strengthened gradually in the community," he said.
To accompany residents, the DKI Provincial Government has involved a number of community elements such as PKK cadres, Dasawisma, to Jumantik to provide direct education on waste sorting in residential areas.
"Assistance is also carried out through the involvement of PKK Kader, Dasawisma, and Jumantik who provide waste sorting education directly to residents," said Dudi.
In addition to sorting household waste, organic waste processing is also beginning to be strengthened through composting, biopore, BSF maggot bioconversion, ecoenzymes, to modern Teba.
