US Vice President Welcomes Pope Leo's Letter on Warning of AI Risks

JAKARTA - Vice President of the United States J.D.Vancemenyambut baik Ensiklik(surat amanat) "MagnificaHumanitas" Paus Leo XIV yang antara lain memuat peringatan teologis soal risiko kemajuan kecerdasan buatan (AI) tidak terkendali.

As a Catholic, Vance admitted that he had not read Pope Leo XIV's encyclical in full. However, he said he had reviewed summaries and excerpts from the Pope's official document calling for caution and ethical responsibility in the development of AI technology.

"What I read sounds very profound and it is something that is expected of a church leader," Van said in a telephone interview with NBCNews reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, May 27.

In his first encyclical since taking office, Pope Leo XIV warned of the uncontrolled advancement of technology and stressed the importance of maintaining moral responsibility in maintaining humanity.

The official circular letter from the Pope to the bishops and all Catholics in the world contains an invitation for innovation to continue, but within the moral and ethical limits designed to protect human dignity and social stability.

Vance, who is a vocal supporter of AI innovation, said the Catholic Church has historically adapted its moral teachings to address new realities resulting from technological and social change.

"The thing to remember about morality is that the principles never change, but the way you apply those principles changes, because the world changes," Vance said.

As technology advances and the shape of war changes, he said, humans need to determine new ways to interact with each other.

"So, you have to rethink the whole teaching of Catholic social doctrine in the light of the new world we live in and I think that's what the Pope (Leo XIV) is trying to do. I'm glad he's doing it," said Vance.
