UN Security Council Condemns Attack on UAE's Barakah Nuclear Plant

JAKARTA - The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) attacked a power plant outside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) earlier this month.

The UN Security Council also warned of serious risks to civilians and the local environment.

"The members of the Security Council strongly condemn the heinous drone attack on a power plant outside the perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra region of the United Arab Emirates," said a UN Security Council member as reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, Wednesday, May 27.

The UN Security Council has stressed that the invasion is a clear violation of international law, which poses a serious risk to the lives of civilians, infrastructure, and the environment.

The UN Security Council also demands an immediate and permanent cessation of all attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE, including peaceful nuclear facilities.

Council members also noted the statement of the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi, who expressed deep concern over the incident, while stressing that military operations that threaten nuclear safety are unacceptable.

"The members of the Security Council call on countries to adhere to the highest standards of nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, and to refrain from any actions that could endanger nuclear safety and security," the statement said.

The UN Security Council again emphasized that the Barakah nuclear power plant is designed, built, and operated in accordance with the highest international standards under the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and IAEA supervision. The Council also reaffirmed its strong support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Middle Eastern country.
