Chinese Foreign Minister Confident US-Iran Peace Deal to be Submitted to UNSC

JAKARTA - Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi believes that an agreement to end the war between the United States and Israel against Iran will be submitted to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to garner support.

Officials in the United States are optimistic, but with caution, regarding progress in the process of realizing a peace agreement.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing hopes that the parties concerned can continue to commit to promoting a ceasefire and can jointly continue to reach a middle ground so that peace can return to the Middle East as soon as possible.

"We believe that when it is achieved, the agreement will be submitted to the UN Security Council for support so that it can have legitimacy and authority," Wang Yi said, quoted by Antara.

During China's presidency of the UN Security Council in May 2026, Wang said that in the future, the body tasked with ensuring international peace and security must move forward and shoulder its responsibilities.

Tensions in the region have escalated since the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran in late February. Tehran then retaliated by attacking Israel and US allies in the Gulf and closing the Strait of Hormuz, a sea route that is vital for world energy production.

A temporary ceasefire was reached on April 8 through Pakistani mediation and President Trump then extended the ceasefire for an unspecified period.

Trump on Saturday (23/5) said a deal to end the war with Iran "has largely been negotiated" and will soon be finalized.
