Pakistan Ready to Coordinate with China on US-Iran Mediation
JAKARTA - Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his country's readiness to coordinate with China in playing a mediation role in the US-Iran peace talks.
This was conveyed by Sharif when he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Monday, May 25.
"Pakistan appreciates China's support for its mediation efforts in negotiations between the United States and Iran and is ready to coordinate closely with China to make a joint contribution to the creation of world peace and stability," said a statement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
Pakistan previously hosted the US-Iran peace talks in Islamabad on April 11-12, 2026, although the talks have not resulted in an agreement.
Sharif also expressed appreciation for China's ideas regarding the resolution of the Middle East conflict.
"The four propositions put forward by President Xi regarding the situation in the Middle East provide a framework for the creation of peace in the region," Sharif said.
Meanwhile, Xi said China and Pakistan over the past 75 years have continued to build a relationship based on mutual understanding, trust, and support.
"Regardless of how the international landscape changes, China will always prioritize the development of China-Pakistan relations in China's diplomacy with neighboring countries," Xi said.
He also reiterated China's support for Pakistan in safeguarding its independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
According to Xi, China appreciates Pakistan's role as a mediator in efforts to restore peace in the Middle East.
He said the two countries would continue to strengthen communication and coordination to oppose unilateralism and Cold War mentality.
Xi also said China and Pakistan should speed up the construction of a community with a closer common future.
Meanwhile, Sharif called Xi a close friend of the Pakistani people and a supporter of world peace.
"The solid friendship between Pakistan and China has been forged personally by generations of previous leaders. This friendship is stronger and unrivaled day by day," Sharif said.
He also stressed that Pakistan still adheres to the "One China" principle and supports Beijing on issues of its core interests.
