JWC 2026 is Ready, the Best Scenario Can Be Promoted as a Film

JAKARTA - The Ministry of Culture is preparing the Jakarta World Cinema or JWC 2026 as a gateway to strengthen the talent, financing, and international networks of Indonesian films.

The plan was discussed by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon together with representatives of the JWC organizers at the Ministry of Culture Office, Jakarta, Tuesday, May 26.

JWC 2026 is scheduled to take place at the end of October. The agenda includes the screening of winning films, awards, and the best actor and actress categories.

A number of winning directors are also planned to attend the masterclass session to share their experiences with young filmmakers.

Fadli said that young talents in Indonesian film needed more space. He also encouraged collaboration between young and senior filmmakers.

"We hope that all talented people in the regions will later be able to get the opportunity and see a big festival like Cannes," said Fadli.

He also highlighted the screenplay writing competition which is a program of the Ministry of Culture. According to Fadli, the best works from the competition can be marketed further, including through the film market.

Fadli opened the best scenario of getting matching fund support so that it could be produced into a film. Matching fund is a joint financing scheme between the government and the industry.

JWC Director of Public Affairs, Razka Robby Ertanto, said JWC had implemented ongoing coaching for the winners of the short film competition. The winners not only received prizes, but were also directed to develop long film projects.

According to Razka, the scheme is important to pave the way for newcomers and maintain the regeneration of national filmmakers.

During the meeting, both parties also discussed a roadmap for developing scenarios for production, follow-up workshops, pitching forums, and investor dinners. The forum is aimed at bringing film creators together with potential investors.

On the international track, Indonesia is also preparing for participation in the film industry agenda in China on June 12-23, 2026. The Indonesian delegation will bring a national booth to strengthen the identity of Indonesian films in the global market.

The Ministry of Culture stated that strengthening the film ecosystem needs to be done from upstream to downstream: talent, scenarios, financing, distribution, and international networks. Without that chain, good films easily stop in the idea room and are difficult to get to the screen.
