Waisak Day, CFD May 31 in Jakarta Cancelled

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Transportation Office (Dishub) has canceled the implementation of a car-free day (CFD) in Jakarta this weekend, starting from along Jalan Jenderal Sudirman to Jalan MH Thamrin, as well as other points.

The discontinuation of the Sudirman-Thamrin CFD is due to the commemoration of the Vesak Day 2570 which coincides with Sunday, May 31, 2026.

"In order to commemorate Vesak Day 2570, the implementation of the free motor vehicle day (HBKB) on Sunday, May 31, was canceled," said Acting Head of the DKI Jakarta Transportation Service Ujang Harmawan in his statement, Tuesday, May 26.

Ujang said that the abolition of CFD was in accordance with Article 5 paragraph (1) of DKI Jakarta Governor Regulation Number 12 of 2016 concerning the Implementation of Motor Vehicle Free Day.

"This article stipulates that the implementation of HBKB can be canceled if at the same time an event of a special, national or international nature is also carried out, where the activity requires a special traffic and security arrangement," said Ujang.

Usually, every Sunday, the DKI Provincial Government holds CFD on a number of roads in five administrative city areas. The largest CFD in Jakarta is still taking place along Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Jenderal Sudirman, and Jalan Jenderal Sudirman every Sunday morning. The protocol area is a favorite spot for residents to run, ride a bike, exercise, and just walk without vehicle pollution.

Starting June 2026, the DKI Provincial Government will also advance the operating hours of the Sudirman-Thamrin CFD to 05.30 WIB to 10.00 WIB. Previously, the CFD started at 06.00 WIB. This policy was taken to give people more time for activities.

In addition, the DKI Provincial Government is preparing the Jalan HR Rasuna Said corridor as a new CFD location in South Jakarta. The area is projected to be an alternative to Sudirman-Thamrin, which has always been crowded with residents every weekend.

Based on information from the DKI Provincial Government's Jakarta Low Emission program, West Jakarta holds CFD on Jalan Gajah Mada and Hayam Wuruk in the second week of every month. Meanwhile, Central Jakarta has CFD on Jalan Suryopranoto in the third week of every month.

In East Jakarta, the HBKB is held on Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Sudirman Raya, and Jalan Sudirman Barat. In South Jakarta, the HBKB is held on Jalan Sudirman Raya, Jalan Sudirman, and Jalan Sudirman Barat.
