Not Just a Treat, Milk Coffee Has Many Health Benefits
JAKARTA - Milk coffee has become one of the favorite drinks of the Indonesian people. From modern coffee shops to homemade blends, the combination of the bitter taste of coffee and the soft sweetness of milk makes this drink popular with various circles.
But behind the delicious taste and popularity, milk coffee also has a number of interesting health benefits to know.
For many people, a cup of coffee in the morning is an important ritual to increase focus and energy. Coffee itself is known as a source of natural antioxidants, especially compounds called polyphenols, which play a role in helping the body fight free radicals and reduce inflammation. When combined with milk, the benefits are said to increase.
A study published in the Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry in 2023 found that the combination of polyphenols from coffee with protein in milk can work more effectively in relieving inflammation than coffee without milk.
This study examines how polyphenols and proteins interact and influencecell responses to inflammation.
Nutritionist Melissa Mroz-Planells, D.C.N., R.D.N. said polyphenols have an important role in maintaining body health.
"Polyphenols act as antioxidants that help fight free radicals (unstable molecules) and help protect against cell damage that is common due to inflammation," said Melissa, quoted from the Prevention website.
Polyphenols themselves are found in many plant foods such as berries, spices, nuts, tea, whole grains, and coffee. These compounds are known to help reduce oxidative stress, a condition that can trigger inflammation in the body.
Meanwhile, internal medicine and rheumatology specialist, Scott Zashin, M.D., explained that the combination of coffee and milk has the potential to provide better anti-inflammatory effects.
"If you drink coffee (polyphenols) and milk (amino acids), the anti-inflammatory effect is stronger than coffee alone," said Dr. Zashin.
Not only does it help fight inflammation, but milk coffee can also provide other benefits if consumed in reasonable amounts. The caffeine content in coffee can help improve alertness, concentration, and mood. Meanwhile, milk contributes to proteins, calcium, and vitamins that are important for bone health and body function.
However, experts warn that the benefits of milk coffee still depend on the way it is served. Adding excessive sugar, sweet syrup, or high-fat creamers can reduce the health benefits of this drink.
Therefore, milk coffee with lower sugar levels or using fresh milk can be a better choice.
Although the results of the study on milk coffee sound promising, registered dietitian from New York City, Keri Gans, M.S., R.D.N., C.D.N., warns that the study still has limitations.
"It should be noted that this study is an in vitro study which is not the same as human studies, so the results should be seen as preliminary findings," said Gans.
Milk coffee should still be seen as part of an overall healthy diet, not as a 'cure' to prevent disease. Combining it with a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and quality protein remains the best way to maintain health.
If you have been enjoying a cup of milk coffee every morning or afternoon, there is good news, namely this favorite drink is not only delicious and popular, but also has the potential to benefit the body, provided it is enjoyed wisely.
