Beware of Extreme Weather Today! Heavy Rain in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Makassar

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early warning in the form of the potential for light, moderate, and heavy rain that may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds in various major cities in Indonesia on Sunday, May 24.

Quoted from the BMKG official website, reported by Antara, the prakirawan Miftah Ali explained in general that the convergence area extends from Bengkulu, the waters west of Lampung to the southwest of Banten, the Halmahera Sea, the Gulf of Cendrawasih to West Papua, and the Pacific Ocean north of West Papua.

Similar conditions were also observed in the waters north of Aceh, West Kalimantan, West Java, Southeast Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, Gorontalo, and the Banda Sea.

This condition is able to increase the potential for rain cloud growth along the areas that are passed by convergence or confluence.

Therefore, his party estimates that several major cities will have the potential to experience moderate to heavy rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds, namely in the Bengkulu, Bandung, Pontianak, Palangka Raya, Banjarmasin, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Manado, Nabire and Jayawijaya regions.

Meanwhile, several other major cities will experience light to moderate rain, namely the Medan, Pekanbaru, Tanjungpinang, Padang, Jambi, Palembang, Jakarta, Serang, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Samarinda, Makassar, Kendari, Palu, Gorontalo, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari and Merauke.

Meanwhile, the big cities that are expected to only experience cloudy conditions today are the Banda Aceh, Pangkalpinang, Denpasar, Mataram, and Kupang areas.

Previously on Friday, BMKG said that a number of waters in North Sumatra had the potential to experience high waves on May 23 to 26, 2026 and must be watched out for because they could interfere with shipping, especially for fishermen who use boats.

"Waves can reach a height of 1.5 to 2.5 meters which are potentially occurring on May 23 to 26, 2026," said BMKG Praktirawan of the Belawan Maritime Class II Meteorological Station, Rizki Fadhillah Pratama Putra.

Wind patterns in the waters off the east coast of North Sumatra generally move from west to north with wind speeds ranging from 2 -15 knots.
