Minister: Government is Waiting for DPR's Readiness to Discuss Revision of Election Law

JAKARTA - The Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, said the government was waiting for the readiness of the DPR RI to discuss the revision of Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections.

Supratman said the revision of the Election Law was a proposal of the DPR's initiative so that the government waited for the schedule for its discussion from parliament.

"The government is ready to discuss, but we wait for the DPR," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, May 20.

He said there was no urgent urgency to discuss the revision of the Election Law because the 2029 election stage was still quite long.

"If it has entered the 2029 election stage, it can use the current law. So, there is nothing urgent about it," he said.

However, Supratman emphasized that the government was ready to participate in the discussion whenever the DPR began processing the revision.

Previously, the Chairperson of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, said that the revision of the Election Law would be designed to prioritize the principles of honesty and fairness and not to harm the people.

Puan said all political parties in the DPR had conducted formal and informal communications regarding the discussion of the revision of the Election Law.

"We want the upcoming elections to be carried out fairly, then not to harm the people, to be beneficial for the nation and state," said Puan in Jakarta, Tuesday (12/5).

He did not deny that the 2029 election stage was getting closer. However, he said, the Election Bill must be designed to make the best election system for the people.

"So, we will continue to have the best possible talks, informal and formal," he said.
