Toyota Showcases Three-Wheel Vehicle for Urban Compact Mobility
JAKARTA - Toyota introduced a three-wheeled electric vehicle concept called the Land Hopper Concept, an innovative compact mobility designed to meet short-distance travel needs. Although its appearance is closer to a scooter than a legendary SUV like the Land Cruiser, this concept still carries Toyota's typical adventure and practicality philosophy.
As one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world, Toyota is known for its tough vehicles for heavy terrain and outdoor activities. Now, this approach has been translated into a much smaller form through Land Hopper, a tiny vehicle designed to explore urban areas more practically.
In terms of design, the Land Hopper is unique with a mix of electric scooter elements and futuristic three-wheeled vehicles. This vehicle carries two front wheels with a special tilt mechanism that allows the front to move flexibly on uneven surfaces.
Launching from Visordown, Wednesday, May 20, the system is claimed to provide better stability than a regular two-wheeled vehicle. Toyota said the configuration provides an intuitive and exciting driving experience that is unlike any car or bike.
In addition, the control character is also made more user-friendly for users who are not used to driving two-wheeled vehicles. Interestingly, Toyota does not position the Land Hopper as a replacement for a car.
This vehicle is actually designed to complement mobility. Its compact dimensions allow the Land Hopper to be folded and stored in the trunk of a car, so it can be used for short trips when arriving at the destination, traveling, or exploring crowded vehicle areas.
The concept is considered in line with the touring and overlanding lifestyle that has long been attached to Land Cruiser users. Many adventurous vehicle owners often carry bicycles, scooters, and camping equipment to support their activities in various locations.
Toyota also sees the potential of Land Hopper as a mobility solution for elderly users or those who no longer use a full vehicle license. Based on the revision of the Japanese Road Traffic Law, this vehicle is said to have the opportunity to enter the category of small motorcycles so that it can be used by drivers aged 16 years and over without requiring a conventional license.
In terms of size, the Land Hopper is really made very compact. This vehicle has a length of 1,355 mm, a width of 600 mm, and a height of 930 mm, smaller than most motorcycles. The low seat position and compact body are also designed to make it easier for riders to maneuver and drive daily.
Although there is no certainty about mass production, this concept shows Toyota's new direction in developing light electric transport. In the midst of increasingly crowded cities, the presence of a tiny three-wheeled vehicle like the Land Hopper could be a more relevant future mobility solution than many people imagine.
