Meeting Putin, Xi Jinping wants China-Russia to build a new global governance
JAKARTA - Chinese President Xi Jinping called for long-term strategic cooperation with Russia to build a fairer and more equal global governance system in his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Beijing.
The current global situation is "complex and turbulent" due to the rise of "unilateral hegemony," but peace, development, and cooperation remain the world's main aspirations, Xi was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency.
He also called for a more comprehensive strategic coordination between China and Russia to promote the development of both countries.
According to Xi, China-Russia relations are getting closer as political trust and strategic cooperation increase, relations in various sectors expand, and joint efforts are made to uphold international justice and equality.
Putin began a two-day visit to China on Tuesday, days after US President Donald Trump completed his three-day visit and attended a summit with Xi.
Putin's visit coincided with the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between China and Russia.
The agreement, which was signed in 2001 by Putin and Chinese President Jiang Zemin, was extended on Wednesday.
