Trump Wants Veto on Russian and Chinese Investment in Greenland
JAKARTA - US President Donald Trump is trying to get a veto over potential Russian and Chinese investments in Greenland.
According to a report by The Telegraph citing diplomatic sources, the Trump administration's main goal in negotiations on the future of Greendland is to prevent China from accessing mineral resources on the island.
Representatives from the US, Greenland, and Denmark are reportedly secretly negotiating a secret deal that could fulfill Trump's desire to control the region.
The talks are designed to give Trump the opportunity to no longer use threats to take over the Arctic island by military force, according to The Telegraph.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, Tuesday, May 19, Washington was reportedly concerned about China's dominance in the global supply of rare earth elements, which reached around 70 percent, as well as control over 90 percent of the processing process. America considers China can use it as a tool of pressure.
Another source told the newspaper that the Americans would only try to extract most of the oil, uranium, rare earth metals, and other important minerals under the ice layer if Beijing cut off global supplies.
Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. However, Trump has repeatedly stated that the territory should join the US, emphasizing the strategic importance of the island for national security.
The Danish government and Greenland have warned Washington against taking over the island, and stressed that they hope their territorial integrity is respected.
