Guardiola Confident Jeremy Doku Has Mentality Capable of Challenging Vinicius and Yamal
JAKARTA - Pep Guardiola says Jeremy Doku has the ability to rival Vinicius Junior and Lamine Yamal as one of the best wingers in the world.
The Belgian striker scored a stunning goal in Manchester City's 3-0 win over Brentford on May 9, 2026.
The goal followed important goals against Everton and Southampton. The 23-year-old has scored in three consecutive games for the first time, before Manchester City won 3-0 over Crystal Palace in the Premier League and won the FA Cup after beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final.
With Doku in his best form at Manchester City, Guardiola was asked after the win over Brentford if he could reach the same level as Vinicius and Yamal.
"Yes, of course. Always under pressure. Always accept it. It's very nice. We are very happy. Now he won the game. However, he has always been very, very good," said Guardiola.
Doku recently stated that his lack of goals compared to some other wingers has meant he has not been recognised as one of the best wingers in the world.
However, Guardiola insists that it all starts with having the right mindset.
"It depends on your mentality. I want to be one of the best wingers in the world. If not, you're in a comfort zone and you say, no, it's okay, it's okay."
"You should say, I always try, with dribbles and so on. I say, I want to be one of the best of the best. That's when you reach that level," said Guardiola.
Manchester City's hopes of winning the English League title are still very intense. Arsenal is still five points ahead at the top of the table after defeating Burnley 1-0 on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, early morning WIB.
The Citizens will only play the 37th week match against Bournemouth on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, early morning WIB. That means, Guardiola's troops have to win.
If the scenario is like this, Manchester City is only two points behind Arsenal with the league's final match to be the determinant of who will win the English League title this season.
