Turkey Condemns Israel's Barbaric Action of Attacking Humanitarian Aid Ship for Gaza
JAKARTA - Turkey condemned the intervention of Israeli forces in international waters against the Sumud Flotilla humanitarian aid heading to the Gaza Strip and considered the incident as an act of piracy.
"We condemn the intervention of Israeli forces in international waters against the Sumud Humanitarian Aid Fleet, which was organized to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, which is a new act of piracy," the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, quoted by Sputnik, Tuesday, May 19.
Ankara also said Israel's intimidation actions and tactics would not hinder international solidarity with the Palestinian people. Turkey demanded that Israel immediately stop the interception and unconditionally release the participants of the fleet that was detained.
"The international community, especially the countries whose citizens are on board the fleet, must ensure the safety of civilians and hold those responsible accountable under international law," said the head of communications at the presidential office, Burhanettin Duran.
Duran added that Israel attacked a civilian initiative by activists from around 40 countries aimed at breaking the blockade of the Gaza Strip and providing humanitarian aid.
He called Israel's actions "acts of barbarism and immorality," which are contrary to international law and humanitarian principles.
Turkish authorities continue to take all necessary steps for the safe return of Turkish citizens and others on board the fleet.
The Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid for the Gaza Strip departed from Barcelona on April 15.
On the night of April 29-30, activists said Israeli forces intercepted the ships near the island of Crete, damaging the engines and navigation systems before leaving the area.
On Monday, organizers said the flotilla was again surrounded and faced an attempt to forcibly intercept by an Israeli warship in international waters, about 250 nautical miles off the Gaza coast.
