Report: There is a Chance Keir Starmer Resigns from the Position of British Prime Minister
JAKARTA - A media report says there is a chance that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will resign and hand over his post to Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham.
This can happen if Burnham manages to win the by-election in the Makerfield constituency, according to a report by The Telegraph, which was reported by Sputnik, Friday (15/5).
Nearly 100 British lawmakers have urged Starmer's resignation after Labour suffered a drubbing in recent local elections.
A number of cabinet ministers have also resigned in protest against Starmer, including Health and Social Secretary Wes Streeting, who is known to be the British PM's main rival.
Burnham, another challenger to Starmer, plans to stand down as an MP, which would allow him to trigger a new prime minister election.
Meanwhile, figures close to Starmer urged the PM not to declare his resignation before the by-election on June 18.
The reason is that resigning before that date could trigger "chaos" in the Labour Party's leadership election, according to a report in The Telegraph.
The report also said that senior figures in the Labour Party, Angela Rayner and Ed Miliband, may be able to hold back their leadership ambitions in favor of supporting Burnham, if he succeeds in winning the by-election and triggering a new party leader election.
