JAKARTA - David Beckham became the first British sportsman to enter the billionaire group. Citing lThe Mirror, Friday, May 15, the wealth of the former England national team captain along with his wife, Victoria Beckham, is now approaching 1.2 billion pounds, or around Rp25.2 trillion assuming a rate of £1 = Rp21,000.

The figure jumped sharply from £500 million the previous year. According to the Sunday Times Rich List, the Beckham couple's wealth is now almost double that of King Charles III's personal wealth, which is estimated at £680 million, or around Rp14.3 trillion at the same exchange rate.

The surge is not just coming from advertising and sponsorships. Its biggest source comes from Beckham's properties and shares in Major League Soccer club Inter Miami.

Beckham is said to have invested 16 million pounds in Inter Miami. The club officially became a member of MLS in 2018 and is now strengthened by Lionel Messi.

The investment is now worth much more. The Sunday Times Rich List compiler estimates Beckham's stake in Inter Miami is worth £300m.

Beckham also has an interest in a property project around Inter Miami's new 25,000-capacity stadium. The Freedom Park complex will contain shops, entertainment areas, hospitality and offices. Beckham's stake in the project is estimated at £400 million.

Robert Watts, compiler of the Sunday Times Rich List, took a light-hearted swipe at the situation.

"I wouldn't want to play Monopoly against David Beckham," he said.

In the latest list, the Beckham family rose from joint 273rd to 141st place. Their wealth also includes a £50 million home in London and a £20 million property in the Cotswolds.

The Sunday Times Rich List recorded the 350 richest individuals and families in Britain. Their total wealth rose 1.4 percent to 784 billion pounds.

Britain now has 157 billionaires, down 20 people from four years ago. The minimum threshold for inclusion on the list is now £340 million.

Other big names also made the list. Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis have a combined fortune of 375 million pounds. Their wealth was boosted by a reunion tour that raked in almost 400 million pounds from ticket sales.

From the world of music, Emily Eavis of Glastonbury made the list for the first time. The Glastonbury festival is estimated to be worth at least 400 million pounds.

On the list of young rich kids, Tyson Fury has 162 million pounds. He is above Dua Lipa with 150 million pounds, but still below Harry Styles who is estimated to have 235 million pounds.

Separate research from the TUC highlighted another side of the rich list. The number of billionaires in Britain has doubled since 2010, while real wages for ordinary workers have stagnated.

"It is clear that wealth does not trickle down. Wealth is actually buried by those at the top," said TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak.
