Nadiem Makarim Now in House Detention

JAKARTA - Former Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Nadiem Anwar Makarim, has officially undergone house arrest in the case of alleged corruption in the education digitization program in the form of procurement of Chromebook laptops and Chrome Device Management (CDM) in the Ministry of Education and Culture in 2019-2022, since Monday (11/5) evening.

"Last night the public prosecutor's team (JPU) had carried out the determination of the panel of judges, namely against brother NM (Nadiem Makarim) was transferred to house arrest and last night it was carried out by us," said Head of the Legal Information Center (Kapuspenkum) Kejagung Anang Supriatna reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, May 11.

He explained that for the supervision process, his party cooperated with the police.

"If he, he can't leave the house without the permission of the panel of judges and the public prosecutor. There must be permission," he said.

In addition, Nadiem was also fitted with a detector bracelet which is part of the standard operating procedures for house detention.

"The important thing is that when there are prisoners being escorted or what, they are usually wearing bracelets," he said.

Previously, the Corruption Court Panel at the Central Jakarta District Court granted the request to transfer the status of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research and Technology for the period 2019-2024 Nadiem Anwar Makarim to house arrest from the previous prison inmate.

Presiding Judge Purwanto Abdullah stated that the application was granted by considering Nadiem's health condition. The detention was calculated from May 12, 2026.

However, he emphasized that Nadiem must be in his residence for 24 hours in 7 days so that he cannot leave his residence except for some activities.

The activity in question is undergoing surgery on Wednesday (13/5) and further medical treatment at the hospital and trial. For medical control, a written permission from the Chief Judge based on a written recommendation from a doctor is required first.

While being under house arrest, Nadiem is also required to wear an electronic monitoring device on his body and is required to report to the JPU twice a week.

Nadiem is also required to hand over the Indonesian passport, foreign passport (if any), and all other travel documents to the JPU, and is not allowed to communicate directly or indirectly with witnesses or other defendants in the alleged Chromebook corruption case.
