BI Reveals April 2026 Real Sales Index is Expected to Decrease
JAKARTA - Bank Indonesia (BI) reported that retail sales performance was expected to remain stable in April 2026, which was reflected in the Real Sales Index (IPR) which was estimated to reach 231.0. However, this achievement is lower than the IPR in March 2026 which was recorded at 256.7.
The Executive Director of the BI Communication Department, Ramdan Denny Prakoso, explained that the retail sales performance was mainly supported by the growth in sales of the Spare Parts and Accessories Group with an index of 163.1, growing 18.8 percent (yoy), Other Household Equipment with an index of 83.4, growing 1.4 percent, and the Subgroup of Sandang with an index of 99.9, growing 4.4 percent.
On the other hand, several groups are expected to still experience contraction, especially the Cultural and Recreational Goods Group with an index of 59.0 or down 1.1 percent (yoy), Food, Beverages, and Tobacco with an index of 327.9 or down 2.1 percent (yoy), and Motor Vehicle Fuel with an index of 103.5 or contracted 2.8 percent (yoy).
"On a monthly basis, retail sales performance is also expected to decline in line with the end of the 1447 H Ramadan and Idulfitri HBKN period. IPR April 2026 was recorded at -10.0 percent (mtm), after previously growing by 10.3 percent (mtm) in the previous period," he said in a statement, Tuesday, May 12.
He added that the decline occurred in all coverage groups with the deepest contraction in the Cultural and Recreational Goods Group of 14.1 percent (mtm); Food, Beverages, and Tobacco 10.7 percent (mtm); and Information and Communication Equipment 10.9 percent (mtm).
Meanwhile, the results of the March 2026 Retail Sales Survey (SPE) showed that retail sales still experienced growth compared to February 2026, both annually and monthly.
This condition is reflected in the March 2026 IPR which was recorded at 256.7 or grew by 3.4 percent (yoy), although lower than the growth of February 2026 of 6.5 percent (yoy).
On an annual basis, sales growth in March 2026 was supported by an increase in the Parts and Accessories group with an index of 168.1 or grew 15.5 percent (yoy), Cultural and Recreational Goods with an index of 68.7 or grew 14.8 percent (yoy), and Food, Beverages, and Tobacco with an index of 367.2 or increased 4.7 percent (yoy).
In terms of monthly, IPR March 2026 grew 10.3 percent (mtm), higher than February 2026 which grew 4.1 percent (mtm).
All groups recorded an increase, especially the Cultural and Recreational Goods Group by 12.9 percent (mtm), Food, Beverages, and Tobacco by 10.8 percent (mtm), Motor Vehicle Fuel by 9.3 percent (mtm), and the Subgroup of Sandang by 26.2 percent (mtm), in line with the increasing demand of the community during Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr 1447 H.
