Nunukan Child Abuse Case Ends Peacefully Through Restorative Justice

NUNUKAN - The police have resolved the case of alleged child abuse in Nunukan Regency through the restorative justice (RJ) mechanism after both parties agreed to make peace.

Nunukan Police Chief, Iptu Barasa revealed that the case began on Friday, March 27, 2026 at around 08.00 WITA. The reported with the initials BA alias Amri found that his house on Jalan Pesantren RT 009, Nunukan, was allegedly broken into by a thief.

"After searching for information, BA found three minors with initials MA, MH, and MI on Jalan Antasari RT 022. The three of them were suspected of selling BA's belongings to scrap buyers," said Iptu Barasa.

"It is suspected that he was carried away by emotions after finding out that his belongings were taken without permission, BA took physical action against the three children using a tapang wood branch and a red meranti wood on the legs and arms," he continued.

BA then reported the alleged theft to the Nunukan Police. However, on the other hand, the victim's family also reported the alleged violence against children.

"Following up on these interrelated reports, the Nunukan Police Criminal Investigation Unit summoned both parties for questioning and facilitated the mediation process," he said.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations of the North Kalimantan Police (Kaltara), Kombes Pol. Slamet Wahyudi said restorative justice was taken into account in terms of law, humanity, and the best interests of children.

"The settlement of the case through restorative justice is carried out after there is an agreement between the two parties. In this case, each party acknowledges its mistake and agrees to resolve the issue peacefully," said Kombes Slamet, Monday (11/5/2026).

He explained, in the mediation process, the victim's family admitted that their children had taken BA's belongings without permission. Meanwhile, BA also admitted that he had committed abuse that caused the victim's injuries.

"From the results of the mediation, the two parties then agreed to make peace, forgive each other, and voluntarily withdraw the police report without coercion," he explained.

In addition, the parents of the victim are committed to increasing supervision of their children so that similar incidents do not occur again.

"With the peace declaration, the legal process against BA has been officially stopped through the restorative justice mechanism," said Slamet.

Slamet emphasized that this step is expected to be a lesson for the public not to take action as a judge even if they face allegations of criminal acts.

"Every legal issue must be resolved according to procedures. The public is urged not to act outside the legal corridor, especially if it concerns children," he concluded.
