US Transports Enriched Uranium from Venezuela

JAKARTA - The US Department of Energy said it had moved enriched uranium from Venezuela for reprocessing.

"In a victory for the United States, Venezuela, and the world, the US Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA), together with partners, has completed the removal of all remaining enriched uranium from the old research reactor in Venezuela," the department said.

It is stated that the uranium transfer was carried out together with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

More than 13 kilograms of excess uranium material was safely packaged and transported 100 miles by road to a port in Venezuela.

The material was then transferred to a special transport ship and brought to the US in early May.

The US Department of Energy said the uranium being moved would be processed and reused to support US energy needs.
