DKI Keruk 205 Thousand Cubic Meters of Lumpur in Dams and Rivers to Increase Capacity

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has dredged and drained 205,693 cubic meters of sediment in reservoirs, situ, ponds, rivers or streams in five Jakarta Administrative cities until April 30, 2026 to increase the water body's capacity.

"With details of dredging 179,897 cubic meters and draining 25,796 cubic meters. This activity started since January 2 and will continue to be expanded," said Head of the Data and Information Center of the DKI Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA) Hendri, as reported by ANTARA, Saturday, May 9.

He said that dredging and draining were carried out at 754 points, namely 327 points in East Jakarta, 104 points in West Jakarta, 143 points in North Jakarta, 119 points in South Jakarta, and 61 points in Central Jakarta.

The dredging is carried out in macro channels, such as rivers or streams, using heavy equipment, while the drainage is carried out in smaller micro channels and connections (PHB) with manual methods and the help of tools in the form of sacks, hoes and sacks.

The draining of the channel, said Hendri, was carried out to overcome the sedimentation of mud to increase the capacity of the channel, prevent clogging, and reduce waterlogging.

Dredging in reservoirs/situ/embung and rivers/rivers to PHByang channels that are quite large is carried out using heavy equipment by transporting sediment sludge that settles to maximize the capacity again.

Previously, the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung instructed his staff, including the DKI Water Resources Management Service, to continue to dredge rivers/reservoirs/situ/embung to anticipate flooding, especially considering the rainfall in the capital city a few days ago was high, reaching 150 millimeters per day, causing flooding.

"I have ordered the ranks to continue to anticipate and dredge rivers. Yesterday, the information was already El Nino, it turned out to be raining," said Pramono.
