Liverpool Owner Sets Target: Don't Be Satisfied with Ordinary
JAKARTA - Liverpool's majority owner, John Henry, said that Fenway Sports Group (FSG), the parent company of The Reds, wants the club not to be satisfied with mediocrity.
The ultimatum was launched given that FSG's two largest assets continue to perform poorly. Liverpool have lost 18 times this season - their worst record since recording the same number in Brendan Rodgers' last full season as coach in 2014/2015.
Even so, the Reds still look to qualify for the Champions League, which remains the minimum requirement for Manager Arne Slot after winning the English League a year ago.
Another asset that is also in a state of collapse is the Boston Red Sox baseball club. Henry responded to the dismissal of the long-serving Boston Red Sox Manager, Alex Cora, last month after the team won only 10 of their first 27 games this season.
In an email to Sports Business Journal, Henry referred to incidents from Liverpool's past and Arne Slot - who is understood to still have the backing of Anfield's management - that this season should be a one-off.
"The fans are frustrated. The Sox have been playing poorly for their first 25 games. I remember an airplane flying over our heads when we beat Manchester United 7-0 (that actually happened before the game, more than two years ago) that said 'FSG OUT!'."
"That doesn't mean you ignore them, it means you work harder. You are not satisfied with mediocre results. You have to win," Henry wrote.
Liverpool still has three remaining matches in the English League, which is quite heavy. They have to face Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
After that, Arne Slot's troops will visit Aston Villa's home and close the league at Anfield against Brentford.
The three matches must not slip at all so that Liverpool can continue to play in the Champions League next season.
