48th ASEAN Summit: President Prabowo strengthens food and energy security of the region
JAKARTA - The President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, officially completed a series of working visits during the 48th ASEAN Summit which took place in Cebu, Philippines. In the forum, Indonesia successfully encouraged the strengthening of the commitment of Southeast Asian countries in facing global challenges, especially in the food and energy security sectors.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, Sugiono, explained that the main focus of this meeting was how ASEAN responded collectively to the impact of global geopolitical uncertainty.
ASEAN Collective Response to the Global Crisis
The situation in the Middle East is one of the main highlights because of its impact that extends to Southeast Asia. Foreign Minister Sugiono emphasized that the conflict affects the economic stability of the region, especially on the availability of essential commodities.
"The point is the joint response of ASEAN in responding to the situation in the Middle East which has a direct effect on the lives of countries in the region, especially in the economic, food, and energy sectors," said Sugiono in a press statement in Jakarta, Saturday (9/5/2026).
ASEAN Resilient Initiative
ASEAN leaders agreed that this region must be a resilient region. This is in line with President Prabowo Subianto's government vision which makes food and energy security as pillars of national sovereignty.
In this 48th ASEAN Summit, there are several concrete results (deliverables) that were agreed to strengthen the defense fortress of the regional economy:
ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement: An agreement to ensure the security of oil supply between member countries. APTERR (ASEAN Plus Three Emergency Rice Reserve): Strengthening emergency rice reserves to maintain food stability in Southeast Asia.Global War Impact on Local Communities
Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono also reminded that in the current era of globalization, armed conflicts in any part of the world will have a quick impact on people in Indonesia and other neighboring countries.
"We realize together, the war that is happening in the far region will quickly directly impact the lives of our people. This is what is felt and becomes the collective awareness of all ASEAN countries," he concluded.
