Shocking, This is the Result of the Collision Test of BYD Seal 6 DM-i and Tesla Model YL Made in China
JAKARTA - Two Chinese-made cars, namely the BYD Seal 6 DM-i and Tesla Model YL, managed to achieve five-star ratings in the latest safety tests from ANCAP. Of all the models tested, the Seal 6 DM-i became the vehicle with the most impressive results thanks to its strong performance in various collision scenarios.
In the Adult Passenger Protection category, the BYD Seal 6 DM-i scored 92 percent. The plug-in hybrid sedan achieved perfect scores in full frontal collision tests, side impacts, and oblique pole collisions.
Even though the driver's dummy experienced impact loads during the frontal offset collision simulation, the protection in the chest area and the lower leg was still considered adequate. The passenger cabin structure was also said to remain stable during the test.
Reported by Carnewschina, Friday, May 7, for the Child Passenger Protection category, the Seal 6 DM-i obtained a score of 90 percent. All vital body parts of the test dolls for children aged 6 and 10 years old received good protection.
However, ANCAP found that one of the booster seats tested could not be properly installed in the middle of the back row. Meanwhile, the Vulnerable Road User Protection score was 84 percent because some areas around the pillars and the windshield were assessed as potentially causing injuries to pedestrians.
In the Safety Assist sector, this BYD sedan also recorded a score of 84 percent. The Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system works effectively in most tests, although its performance is considered less optimal in a scenario where vehicles cross the lane from the side.
In the Chinese market, this model is marketed under the name Seal 06. The car carries a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated engine with 70 kW or 94 hp power coupled with an electric motor of 130 kW or 174 hp.
Although it was once one of the backbone of BYD's sales in China, the performance of the Seal 6 DM-i market has declined. In the first quarter of 2026, sales fell 39.7 percent year-on-year to 26,650 units due to a gradual reduction in government subsidies, according to China EV DataTracker.
Meanwhile, the Tesla Model YL assembled at the Tesla Shanghai factory also managed to secure an ANCAP five-star rating based on the five-passenger Model Y. However, the agency still carried out a number of additional tests on the three-row SUV.
Tesla Model YL scored 91 percent in the Adult Passenger Protection category. However, ANCAP found an obstacle in installing child safety seats in the second row due to the limited upper seat belt path.
On the third row, both rear-facing and convertible models were also found to be difficult to install using the ISOFix anchor. As a result, the Child Passenger Protection category only received a score of 84 percent. On the other hand, the Model YL recorded a score of 86 percent for Vulnerable Road User Protection and 92 percent in the Safety Assistance category.
The YL model comes as a large crossover with dimensions of 4,976 mm x 1,920 mm x 1,668 mm and a wheelbase of 3,040 mm. The car is equipped with a dual motor AWD drive system that produces 340 kW or 456 hp. With an 82 kWh battery, this vehicle is claimed to be able to travel up to 751 km based on the CLTC standard.
