BTS Meets Mexican President, His Concert is Predicted to Move the City's Economy

BTS met with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum ahead of their concert in Mexico City. The meeting was held at the official invitation of the president and was of great interest, not only for K-pop fans, but also for the city's economic actors.

Yonhap reported on Thursday, May 7, that BigHit Music said the seven BTS members had a 40-minute conversation with Sheinbaum at the presidential office in Mexico City on Thursday.

After that, BTS appeared with Sheinbaum on the balcony of the National Palace. They greeted residents and fans who crowded the Zocalo Square, the center of the Mexican capital. ARMY, the name for BTS fans, came with local residents.

Fans carried posters that read "BTS is always in Mexico's heart" and "Welcome to Mexico". Some were seen crying when they saw the South Korean group live.

Previously, Sheinbaum said BTS would visit the presidential office and greet the public from one of the palace's balconies. He praised BTS' music for consistently carrying the message of "friendship, peace, and love".

BTS is scheduled to perform at the Estadio GNP Seguros, a multi-purpose stadium in Mexico City, on May 7 and May 9-10. The concert is part of the "Arirang" world tour. All tickets for the three shows sold out quickly after going on sale.

Sheinbaum previously called BTS's concert a "historic moment" when the schedule was set in January. He assessed that the enthusiasm of young fans in Mexico was very high.

The impact does not stop on the stage. The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce estimates that BTS's concert has an economic impact of around 107.5 million US dollars.

According to Spotify's 2025 data, Mexico is the fifth largest K-pop market in the world. BTS is the K-pop artist who is played the most by local fans. The data explains why BTS's concert in Mexico City is not just a music event, but also an economic event.
