60-Year-Old Grandmother in Rejang Lebong Becomes Suspect in Child Abduction

JAKARTA - Investigators from the Rejang Lebong Police (Polres) in Bengkulu, have named a woman with the initials S (60 years old) as a suspect in a case of alleged attempted child abduction in Lubuk Belimbing II Village, Rejang Lebong Regency.

The Public Relations Officer of the Rejang Lebong Police, AKP M Hasan Basri, said the suspect, who is a resident of the Central Curup District, was arrested after he had previously been the target of a mob attack with his male companion.

"Of the two suspected perpetrators, one died at the scene due to mass madness. For the other person, namely sister S, has officially been named a suspect," he said, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, May 7.

Explaining Hasan Basri, the incident that befell the victim DA (4) occurred on April 27, 2026 at around 07.30 WIB in the Sindang Beliti Ilir District (SBI).

Suspect S is known to have a special relationship or dating with the male perpetrator with the initials FW (56) who died at the scene.

Based on the results of the preliminary examination, suspect S admitted that he was determined to follow the action because he was invited by the late FW with the promise of certain rewards if their plan was successful.

"Regarding the motive whether the victim will be sold or there are other motives, the investigating officer is still conducting an in-depth investigation. The suspect admitted that he was only invited by his deceased colleague," he said.

In handling this case, he said, the PPA Unit of the Rejang Lebong Police Criminal Investigation Unit has coordinated with the Rejang Lebong District Attorney's Office through the delivery of a Letter of Notification of the Commencement of Investigation (SPDP).

Regarding the victim's condition, Hasan said that the toddler is currently undergoing recovery at the hospital after undergoing surgery due to the physical violence he suffered during the kidnapping.

"We are still waiting for the right time to examine the victim and his parents. In addition, investigators also plan to bring in a psychiatrist to examine the mental condition of suspect S," he said.

On the other hand, the police admitted that they had difficulties in checking the communication equipment belonging to the perpetrator. The cell phone was secured in a severely damaged condition due to being submerged in water during the pursuit by the crowd.

Previously, this kidnapping action had shocked local residents. The victim who was walking to the warung was suddenly ambushed by the two perpetrators and dragged into the forest.

The victim was even hit until he was unconscious before the screams of the residents triggered a mass pursuit that ended in death for one of the perpetrators.
