Rob Threat Increases, BRIN Prepares 5 Pantura Protection Technologies

JAKARTA - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has prepared five flagship technologies as concrete solutions to protect the North Coast of Java (Pantura) from the increasing threat of flash floods.

BRIN Head Arif Satria explained that the five technologies include a modular multi-functional upright embankment and a modular concrete block designed as a coastal protector while having added value, such as wave energy capture and transportation routes.

"The mastery of technology by the nation's children can be the key to solving the rob problem in Pantura while strengthening national technological independence," said Arif, quoted by Antara, Wednesday, May 6.

Arif said BRIN was also developing a breakwater protection layer unit with an automatic interlocking system that was considered more stable and efficient, where this protection layer unit had been applied in 11 areas, most recently in 2025 developed in Nusa Penida, after previously being developed in Pacitan, Sanur, Tuban, and Nias.

"So this is a form of technology that I think is very important because it has high stability, is more economical, and also the production is simpler," he continued.

Arif revealed that his party also presented a sea current platform that allowed embankments and piers to function as independent energy generators.

Another approach developed is hybrid eco-engineering. He explained, this approach is a combination of technical engineering and nature-based solutions to strengthen coastal protection while restoring ecosystems.

"One of the advantages of this technology is that the local content is more than 70 percent," he said.

In response to this, the Head of the North Java Beach Management Authority (BOPPJ) Didit Herdiawan Ashaf said, President Prabowo Subianto asked for a master plan (master plan) for the protection of the North Coast or Pantura Java to be immediately prepared.

Didit said his party was working with various parties such as related ministries/institutions, universities and experts related to the preparation of the master plan.

"For technology, we are assisted by BRIN. With friends from BRIN, we have been talking for more than six months, how the technology is used. Some are used from Indonesia itself, from within, and some are from outside," he said.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure Development Affairs Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) emphasized the importance of an integrated approach in handling Pantura.

Moreover, the Pantura Java region has a significant contribution to the national economy, contributing around 27 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"Considering that there are around 55 million people living in 20 regencies and five cities in the Java hinterland. Meanwhile, about 26 percent of people live in coastal areas. Therefore, this is an urgency that we hope will encourage and mobilize everyone," said AHY.
