Minister of Communication and Information Meutya Emphasizes Digital Awareness from an Early Age to Protect the Young Generation
JAKARTA - The Minister of Communication and Information Technology, Meutya Hafid, emphasized the importance of building digital awareness from an early age so that young people can use technology wisely, safely, and responsibly.
When doing online activities such as using the internet, social media, and online games, Meutya emphasized that self-awareness is the most important thing to protect yourself on digital platforms.
"The most powerful thing is self-awareness, not just supervision. Once you understand that something is detrimental to your future, you have to stop yourself. That's the real power," said Meutya, quoted Wednesday, May 6.
Meutya also added that excessive use has the potential to cause addiction which has an impact on learning achievements, relationships with parents, and students' mental health.
The government, through Government Regulation Number 17 of 2025 concerning the Governance of the Implementation of Electronic Systems in the Protection of Children (PP TUNAS), has established a policy to restrict children's access to risky digital platforms until a certain age.
According to Meutya, this policy is not a unilateral decision, but is based on in-depth scientific studies from experts in psychology, medicine, and best practices of various countries.
"This is a firm protection step so that Indonesian children grow more prepared and able to compete in the digital era," he continued.
Meutya also guaranteed the government's commitment to accelerate the equitable access to quality internet in all regions of Indonesia, including in areas where connectivity is still limited.
"We ensure that every Indonesian child can access the digital world safely," he said.
