Not Only the Police, Prabowo Wants All Law Enforcement Agencies to be Reformed

JAKARTA - Chairman of the National Police Reform Acceleration Commission (KPRP) Jimly Asshiddiqie said President Prabowo Subianto wants to reform all law enforcement agencies, including the judicial power.

According to Jimly, the presidential directive emphasized that after more than 2 decades of the reform era, a thorough evaluation of law enforcement agencies in Indonesia is still needed, not only the National Police. Improvements are not enough to be made in one institution alone.

"The President also gave instructions that we need to reform not only the police. This law enforcement institution also needs evaluation until the judicial power also needs to be reformed," said Jimly after reporting the KPRP recommendations to President Prabowo at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, Tuesday, May 5.

He explained that the reform in question was not limited to improving welfare, such as salary increases for officials. More than that, changes must be made comprehensively and integrally. However, Jimly said that the initial steps of the reform would be focused first on the National Police.

Previously, Jimly handed over 10 books to President Prabowo containing recommendations related to the reform of the National Police from the results of the study conducted by KPRP since November 7, 2025.

In the report, Jimly also ensured that there was no new ministry that oversees the police, so that the National Police remained directly responsible to the president.

Regarding the mechanism for appointing the national police chief, Jimly said President Prabowo had decided that the mechanism would remain as it is today, namely the national police chief was appointed by the president with the consent of the DPR.

In addition, Jimly said President Prabowo also agreed to strengthen the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) so that it has more effective authority, including binding recommendations and more independent membership.

Finally, Jimly said President Prabowo had decided that positions that could be occupied by members of the National Police outside the police institution must be regulated in a limited manner, or strictly limited through legal regulations.
