Government Strengthens Interventions to Maintain Food Prices at Producers-Consumers

JAKARTA - The National Food Agency (Bapanas) emphasized that the government continues to strengthen interventions to maintain food price stability from the producer level to the consumer, to protect farmers, maintain supplies, and ensure affordability for the community, including controlling inflation.

"Alhamdulillah, I say thank you. Prices are relatively stable and all food is relatively stable. This is shown by BPS data (Central Statistics Agency). I have to support this," said the Head of Bapanas and Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman in a statement in Jakarta, Monday (4/5).

He appreciated the food condition after the National Religious Great Day (HBKN) Ramadhan and Idul Fitri 1447 Hijriah/2026 Masehi. Efforts to maintain food price stability will continue to be maximized, including in facing Eid al-Adha this year.

"Our dream is for all Indonesian islands, it is food, protein, energy, and ethanol self-sufficiency. This is our dream for the future. Good national defense, if we are sovereign on every island. Why? Inflation does not automatically occur," he said.

Therefore, continued Amran, the deflation that occurred in April 2026 will be anticipated by the government by ensuring that prices at the producer level do not fall too far. On the other hand, prices at the consumer level continue to be kept reasonable for the public.

Bapanas noted that the average live broiler price had been below the Producer Purchase Reference Price (HAP) set at Rp25,000 per kilogram (kg). As of May 3, the average price was Rp23,401 per kg. This price has decreased compared to the beginning of April which was at Rp23,696 per kg.

The price of broiler eggs at producers has also been observed to continue to fall in the past month. The HAP of chicken egg producers is set at Rp26,500 per kg. Meanwhile, as of May 3, the average price was Rp24,890 per kg, while at the beginning of April it was still at Rp25,642 per kg.

To help reduce the cost of production for farmers, Bapanas together with Perum Bulog has started distributing the Feed Corn Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program. This is also to overcome the fluctuation of corn prices which have exceeded 16.81 percent of the Sale Reference Price (HAP) level of farmers/consumers which was set at Rp5.800 per kg.

The target of the SPHP corn feed program is aimed at more than 5 thousand farmers consisting of micro, small, and medium scales with a total population of 53 million poultry in 26 provinces. For this phase, it is estimated that 213.1 thousand tons will be distributed.

Furthermore, to overcome the deflation of chili, Bapanas encourages the Food Distribution Facilitation (FDP) to distribute chili stocks from surplus areas to areas that experience fluctuations in chili prices.

East Indonesia still records high chili prices, so that FDP stocks of chili from producer areas such as South Sulawesi or North Sulawesi are possible to overcome it.

The trend of declining inflation in April 2026, including in the volatile food price component or food inflation, shows that the pressure on food prices has begun to ease after the 2026 Ramadhan and Idul Fitri HBKN.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded a number of strategic food commodities as the main contributors to April's deflation, including broiler chicken meat, broiler chicken eggs, sweet peas, and red peppers.

"The inflation rate for the food, beverage, and tobacco group is generally lower in the period that coincides with the post-Lebaran moment. Along with the normalization of demand after HBKN," said BPS Distribution and Services Statistics Deputy Ateng Hartono in Jakarta, Monday (4/5).

In his presentation, it was mentioned that broiler meat experienced monthly inflation from 3.30 percent in March to deflation of 6.20 percent in April. The inflation of broiler eggs from 2.34 percent in March, fell to deflation of 4.29 percent in April. Red and green chilies also experienced deflation of 14.98 percent and 2.59 percent respectively.

As an implication, the food inflation rate, both annually and monthly, also decreased. Food inflation annually decreased from 4.24 percent in March to 3.37 percent in April.

The figure is still maintained in the range of the government's target of 3 to 5 percent. Meanwhile, the dominant commodities that contribute to inflation include chicken meat, rice, and chicken eggs.

Meanwhile, monthly food inflation was deflationary at 0.88 percent. The deflation in April is a recurring trend since 2024. In April 2024, deflation occurred at 0.31 percent. Likewise, in April 2025, deflation was recorded at 0.04 percent. Food deflation in April 2026 was the deepest.
