After KO Zurdo Ramirez, David Benavidez Challenges Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Buvol
JAKARTA - Boxer David Benavidez, who recently won the WB and WBO cruiserweight (90.7 kg) world champion belts, challenged Saul Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol to step into the ring after he dominated and knocked out (KO) Gilberto Ramirez at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, United States, Sunday.
"I saw Canelo in this building. Do you want to see Canelo vs. David Benavidez?" said Benavidez after the victory over Ramirezyang was watched live through the DAZN channel.
Benavidez stopped Ramirez's resistance with a KO in the sixth round after dominating the champion with a series of hard punches.
The boxer nicknamed "The Mexican Monster" admitted that strength alone was not enough to defeat Ramirez, so he combined speed, strength, movement, punch selection, and intelligence to win the fight.
"I thank him (Ramirez) for the opportunity. I'm a little sorry it happened this way. I like Zurdo Ramirez, but that's the way it is," he said.
After winning to win three different divisions and maintaining an unbeaten record with 32 wins (26 KO), Benavidez immediately turned his attention to Saul Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol.
The Mexican Canelo is a former undisputed world champion who has held four belts in the super middleweight class (WBC, WBA, IBF, and WBO), while Bivol is the WBA, IBF, and WBOWBO light heavyweight world champion from Russia.
"I respect Canelo, he's a great champion, but I'm a great champion too. Let's do it," he said.
When asked if he thought the fight was realistic, Benavidez admitted he didn't know, but stated that he still holds the WBC lightweight title.
In addition to Canelo, Benavidez also put Bivol, who he considers a great boxer, as the next target opponent.
"Bivol is my main target. Bivol is a great fighter, a great champion. I just want to test myself in every fight," he said.
Canelo is expected to face Christian Mbilli for the WBC super middleweight title in September, while Bivol is scheduled to return on May 30 to defend his title in Russia against Michael Eifert.
