National Education Day 2026, JMSI reminds cyber media not to just chase sensations

JAKARTA - The Chairman of the Indonesian Cyber Media Network (JMSI) Teguh Santosa considers that cyber media should not only pursue sensationalism in the midst of the rapid flow of digital information. Media, said Teguh, has a major role in strengthening public education and literacy.

Teguh said education is no longer just taking place in the classroom. Children also absorb knowledge from news portals, digital platforms, and online education channels.

"Education does not only take place in the classroom. Today it can be said that cyber media is the second learning space that reaches millions of children," said Teguh in a written statement received in Jakarta, Saturday, May 2.

According to Teguh, the speed of information dissemination through digital media can help equalize access to knowledge. However, this opportunity is only useful if the media also sorts and presents educational content.

"Cyber media has a great responsibility. Not only spreading news, but also curating content that educates, educates, and builds character," said the lecturer at UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta.

The former Vice Rector of Bung Karno University said the press could make a real contribution to the quality of human resources if journalism was in favor of literacy.

He also highlighted the challenges of artificial intelligence and automation that are changing the world of work. According to Teguh, the younger generation could be left behind if they are not equipped with digital competencies and critical thinking.

"If we don't prepare adaptive human resources, technology-savvy, and have critical sense, we will be spectators in our own country. This is where cyber media must be present as a catalyst," he said.

Teguh encourages JMSI members to increase educational content for students, teachers, and parents. The material can be in the form of curriculum reviews, good learning practices, digital literacy, to citizenship.

"Don't let cyber media be just full of sensation. We need more narratives that highlight inspiring teachers, school innovations, and student achievements in the region," he said.

He also invited cyber media, related ministries, schools, campuses, and learning communities to open discussion spaces for education that are more data-based and field-based.

Teguh emphasized that Hardiknas 2026 needs to be a point to reconsider the role of the press in education. Because, the quality of human resources is Indonesia's stake in global competition.
