Dipha Barus and Hindia Raise the Issue of Generation Trauma in the Single Nafas

JAKARTA - The Indonesian electronic music discography has a new work that brings a deep psychological narrative. Disjoki and producer Dipha Barus officially joined Baskara Putra - better known by the stage name Hindia - to release a new single titled "Nafas".

This collaboration was born out of the personal distress of both musicians regarding how the upbringing and past wounds of the previous generation shape one's identity in the present.

For Dipha, the issue became very real when he entered the phase as a father. He began to realize that there were emotional patterns that were unconsciously inherited from parents and the environment in the past.

"Becoming a father makes me start to see the patterns that I brought from my family and previous generations, patterns that I really processed after adulthood," said Dipha in his statement, Thursday, April 30.

"I grew up in an era where silence was a form of survival. My parents' generation lived under a regime that taught not to talk much, to swallow. And the legacy is not just political, but emotional," continued the 40-year-old disjoki.

In the creative process, Dipha built a repetitive musical composition, resembling a cycle that continues to repeat endlessly. The consistent beat was then responded to by Hindia who wrote the lyrics for the song.

As for Hindia, he captures the repetitive impression as a depiction of the daily struggle of humans in the face of thoughts that continue to haunt in the background.

"When I first heard the demon, what came to mind was the repetitiveness, like the running cadence, like jogging or marathon. From there, I thought of writing something that was also repetitive, about everyday life, about the cycle that keeps happening. Even on days that feel good, there is always something that keeps coming up behind," said Hindia.

Furthermore, Hindia considers awareness of the existence of collective trauma is the first step to breaking the chain of suffering. According to him, acknowledging the existence of wounds without holding grudges is the key to seeing life with a healthier perspective.

He emphasized that "Nafas" is a reflection of someone who chooses to keep moving forward even though the mental burden continues to loom.

The "Nafas" was produced by keeping the Indo-vocal character as the center of attention. Dipha said Baskara's vocals had an intimate weight like someone who was telling a story. Although the arrangements around it move quickly and magnificently, the intimacy of the story remains the main spirit of this song.

In addition, the collaboration single of Dipha Barus and Hindia, "Nafas", is now available on various digital music service platforms.

This work is expected not only to complement the playlist for electronic and indie music fans, but also to ignite a dialogue for listeners to begin processing and coming to terms with the emotional journey of their respective families.
