Arsenal Held to 1-1 by Atletico, VAR's Penalty Revoked as a Highlight

JAKARTA - Arsenal had to settle for a 1-1 draw when they visited Atletico Madrid's home in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. This result is still open, but the VAR decision at the end of the match became the main highlight.

Launching a report from The Mirror, Thursday, April 30, Arsenal actually appeared more neat, especially in the first half. They took the lead through a penalty from Viktor Gyokeres after a foul in the penalty box. The execution went smoothly and brought the visiting team to the lead.

Throughout the first half, Arsenal controlled the game. Gabriel Martinelli and Noni Madueke's movements were quite troublesome for Atletico's back line. Martin Odegaard also had a chance, but failed to maximize it.

Atletico only got up after the break. Coach Diego Simeone changed the approach by strengthening the back line. The change made the hosts more aggressive and started to press.

Amid the pressure, Arsenal defended quite well. Declan Rice, David Raya, and Gabriel Magalhaes performed solidly to maintain the lead.

However, Atletico eventually equalised through a penalty kick executed by Julian Alvarez. The decision was taken after the ball hit Ben White's hand inside the penalty box.

Controversy arose towards the end of the match. Arsenal got a second penalty after an incident in the penalty box. However, after a VAR review, referee Danny Makkelie reversed his decision.

Atletico coach Diego Simeone was seen reacting strongly on the sidelines as the review took place. On the other hand, Arsenal felt disadvantaged because the opportunity to regain the lead was lost.

The hosts had a scare through Antoine Griezmann who hit the crossbar. Arsenal responded in the final minute, but there was no additional goal.

This result extended Arsenal's unbeaten run in the Champions League to 13 matches, equaling the club record. However, they failed to capitalize on the momentum to steal an away win.

The second leg next week will be decisive. With the score still tied, the chances of both teams remain open.
