Train Accident at Bekasi Timur Station, Metro Police: Human Error or System Failure
JAKARTA - Polda Metro Jaya together with the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) are still investigating the cause of the fatal accident involving an online taxi, KRL, and Argo Bromo Anggrek train which caused dozens of people to be injured and dozens of people to die, in East Bekasi.
Head of Public Relations of the Metro Jaya Police, Kombes Budi Hermanto, said the investigation process was carried out by involving a number of parties, including PT Kereta Api Indonesia and KNKT.
"It is under investigation, in coordination with KAI and KNKT. Currently, investigators are still investigating the series of events comprehensively," Budi told reporters, Wednesday, April 29, 2026.
According to him, investigators are currently exploring two main possibilities, namely human negligence and system interference.
"We will investigate whether this is related to human error or there are system constraints. Everything will be traced through witness examination, evidence, and the results of the crime scene investigation," he said.
The accident started when an online taxi broke down at a crossing on a piece of Jalan Ampera, East Bekasi. The vehicle slowed down the KRL until the train stopped on the track.
Not long after, the Argo Bromo Anggrek train from Gambir - Surabaya Pasar Turi collided with the KRL train from behind. A hard collision was inevitable.
As a result of the incident, said Budi, the total number of victims reached 106 people, consisting of 90 injured victims and 16 deaths. The last known dead victim was named Mia Citra (25), who died at the Bekasi City Hospital.
"The number of victims who died increased by one person, so the total was 16 people. We hope there will be no more victims," he said.
He also expressed condolences to all victims and families affected.
As a follow-up, the Metro Jaya Police provided medical and psychological assistance to the victims and their families.
