Samsung Galaxy Glasses Appears, Ready to Challenge Meta and Google in the Smart Glasses Market
JAKARTA - Samsung is reportedly preparing a new line of smart glasses called Galaxy Glasses, which will be the company's second Android XR product after the launch of the Galaxy XR headset.
This device is said to be announced at the end of 2026 and is Samsung's strategic move to enter the artificial intelligence-based wearable market more aggressively.
The latest leaks say the first model, codenamed "Jinju", comes without an internal screen, and is positioned as a lightweight smart glasses device that relies on AI for everyday interactions.
In terms of design, this device is said to be similar to Meta's smart glasses in collaboration with Ray-Ban, as well as Google's AI glasses concept.
However, the main difference lies in the operating system that will use Android XR, Google's mixed reality platform for the new generation of wearable devices.
Samsung relies on Gemini AIGalaxy Glasses is rumored to be integrated with Gemini, allowing users to perform various tasks such as translating writing, taking photos, checking the weather, and getting navigation through Google Maps.
This AI integration is seen as Samsung's main strength to compete, especially since Gemini's capabilities are considered more mature than some other AI assistants in the current wearable market.
The Jinju model is said to be equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 processor, a 12MP Sony IMX681 camera, a 155mAh battery, WiFi and Bluetooth 5.3 support, and weighs around 50 grams.
Audio is directed through directional speakers, while Samsung's filed patent also indicates the use of bone-conduction technology. The lens will use photochromic transition lenses that can adjust the level of darkness automatically.
The price of the initial model is estimated to be in the range of 379 to 499 US dollars. Meanwhile, the premium model with the code "Haean" with a micro-LED screen is scheduled to launch in 2027 with a price tag of between 600 to 900 US dollars.
The strategy of these two models shows Samsung's gradual approach - entering the market with more affordable products before pushing the premium version with an augmented display feature. Even so, Samsung faces very stiff competition.
Meta has sold millions of units of smart glasses and strengthened its dominance through a long-term partnership with EssilorLuxottica, the parent company of Ray-Ban and Oakley. In addition, other players such as XREAL, Rokid, and Apple are also developing or marketing similar devices.
The smart glasses market is now seen as a new battleground for the technology industry, especially after XR headsets have not been able to penetrate the mass market.
Unlike large headsets that tend to be limited to certain uses, smart glasses offer a format that can be worn all day long - more natural, more social, and potentially the future of personal computing devices.
If this rumor proves true, the Galaxy Glasses will be one of Samsung's biggest bets in the wearable category since the launch of the Galaxy Ring.
