Olivia Rodrigo Reveals the Dark Side of Love in New Album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love

JAKARTA - Olivia Rodrigo is ready to stir the emotions of fans through the announcement of her third studio album titled "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love".

Unlike her previous two albums, "Sour" (2021) and "Guts" (2023) which are full of the nuances of teenage anger and heartbreak, the new album which is scheduled to be released on June 12 will explore the complexities she calls "adult female relationships".

"I think the challenge for me was writing a song about romantic love in a positive way. When I started writing this album, I was really in love - kind of my first 'adult woman' relationship," Rodrigo said in a recent interview with Audacy Check In.

Regarding his biggest challenge in the creative process, Rodrigo admitted that writing about happiness is much more difficult than pouring the pain of separation into the lyrics of a song.

According to him, the upcoming third album is his attempt to photograph love from a wider perspective, including vulnerable sides that are often overlooked.

"Writing a song about happiness is much more difficult than a song about heartbreak. It's a challenge for myself to make a love song that also talks about negative feelings in relationships, such as longing, jealousy, and a sense of loss when a partner is not near us," he added.

The guitarist who has Filipino blood emphasized that falling in love does not automatically remove the sense of insecurity in a person. For him, the best love song is born from a combination of beauty and fear of loss.

"I realize all my favorite romantic love songs are beautiful because there's a little fear or longing in them. I feel the same way about falling in love; when I'm in a great relationship, I think I'll start feeling good about myself and everything will go smoothly. However, the reality doesn't work like that," he said.

With the track record of the two previous albums that topped the Billboard 200 chart, expectations for the album "You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love" are very high. Fans are looking forward to how Olivia Rodrigo transforms the feelings of "jealousy" and "yearning" into a musical narrative that is honest and relevant to her generation's listeners.
