DKI Jakarta Partners with Jeju to Become Sister City, Aims to Strengthen Global Position

JAKARTA - The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is expanding its international network by establishing a sister city cooperation with the Jeju Special Autonomous Province, South Korea. This agreement was signed directly at the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI) Seoul, Saturday, April 25.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was carried out by the Governor of DKI Jakarta Pramono Anung and the Governor of Jeju Oh Young-hun, witnessed by the Indonesian Ambassador to South Korea Cecep Herawan.

This cooperation does not stop at the symbolism of inter-regional relations. The DKI Provincial Government opens concrete collaboration spaces in a number of sectors, ranging from tourism, renewable energy, to economy, agriculture, and fisheries.

This step also shows the direction of the DKI Provincial Government's policy, which has begun to aggressively build global partnerships, especially with regions that are considered to have common interests in the development of sustainable cities.

"Jeju is a strategic partner, especially in the development of tourism and sustainable energy. We want this cooperation to have a concrete impact on people in both regions," said Pramono in a statement, Sunday, April 26.

Jeju is known as one of the flagship tourist destinations in South Korea with a development approach that emphasizes environmental sustainability. This model is considered relevant to Jakarta's challenges, especially in the development of clean energy and urban tourism management.

The DKI Provincial Government also targets this cooperation to accelerate the transfer of knowledge and technology, as well as open up new investment opportunities. Pramono associated this partnership with Jakarta's big ambition to rise to a global level in the next few years.

"We are committed to realizing a more connected, inclusive, and sustainable future for Jakarta and Jeju," he said.

It is known that Pramono made a working visit to a number of cities in Asia on April 22-28, 2026. This agenda is directed to expand international partnerships as well as encourage the acceleration of the transformation of Jakarta as a global city.

The visit includes Shenzhen in China, Seoul in South Korea, as well as Tokyo and Kyoto in Japan. A number of bilateral meetings, international forums, and cross-sectoral cooperation explorations are the focus of this visit.

In Shenzhen, Pramono is scheduled to meet with the local government and the Shenzhen Metro. One of his main agendas is the signing of a memorandum of understanding between MRT Jakarta and Shenzhen Metro as part of strengthening public transportation cooperation.

In addition, he also attended the JIEP Business Matching Forum 2026 and discussed with artificial intelligence industry players in a joint forum with the Shenzhen Qianhai AI Industry Association. The visit to the Qianhai Exhibition Hall and meeting with local authorities were used to open investment opportunities in Jakarta.

The agenda continues in Seoul with a focus on the health sector and inter-regional cooperation. The DKI Provincial Government is exploring collaboration with Jeju through the signing of a memorandum of understanding, as well as visiting health facilities such as the Seoul Boramae Medical Center and the Healing Breeze Clinic.

Meanwhile, in Japan, Pramono is scheduled to meet with the Governor of Tokyo to discuss strengthening cooperation between cities. A number of issues to be discussed include green innovation, youth diplomacy, and solutions to urban challenges.

He will also appear at the G-NETS Leaders Summit 2026, a forum that brings together world city leaders to discuss sustainability and climate resilience issues. In addition, Pramono is scheduled to be a speaker at a public lecture at Kyoto University as well as meet with the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
