KLH: Waste Bantargebang Burden 8,000 Tons, Jakarta Must Transform Processing

JAKARTA - Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq stated that the waste load at the Bantargebang Final Processing Site (TPA) had reached 8,000 tons per day, so the people of DKI Jakarta were asked to immediately carry out waste processing transformation.

"At this time, the contribution of waste to the Bantargebang landfill reaches around 8,000 tons per day, which comes from various regions in Jakarta. This condition is a shared responsibility, both heads of departments and mayors. Therefore, changes are needed through two main transformations, namely technological transformation and managerial transformation," said Minister of LH Hanif Faisal Nurofiq as quoted by ANTARA, Friday, April 24.

Minister Hanif emphasized that the Ministry of Environment (KLH) encourages every region to immediately formulate concrete and systematic steps in waste management.

Monitoring systems down to the RT/RW level need to be built to know in detail the daily waste volume and which areas are still weak in management.

"The government has set that by August, waste management must begin to change. After that, only inorganic waste or residues that can be disposed of to Bantargebang. Meanwhile, organic waste must be resolved at the level of each city," said Minister of LH Hanif.

He also realized that waste management was not simple. The large capacity for processing organic waste requires adequate infrastructure, while facilities such as the Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Waste Processing (TPS3R) that currently exist are considered insufficient.

Therefore, more detailed and data-based planning is needed.

"Each region is asked to have clear targets, concrete actions, and achievement indicators. Without targets, the direction of policy will not be clear. Jakarta is considered to have a large capacity to carry out transformation, both in terms of human resources, fiscal, and proximity to the center of government. With this potential, waste problems should be resolved if there is a willingness," said the Minister of LH.

Minister Hanif also emphasized that waste is an individual and collective responsibility based on Law Number 18 of 2008. Therefore, the central government continues to encourage funding support through cross-ministry and agency (K/L) coordination, so that waste management transformation can run optimally.

"In terms of composition, about 57 percent of waste comes from households, while 43 percent comes from the area. Area waste can be managed with a business approach, while household waste must be a priority for public services," said Minister Hanif.

He also assessed that the unprofessional management of waste so far was the root of various problems, including the potential for deviation.

"In the future, waste management is expected not only to be carried out by the government, but by special bodies that are more professional and oriented towards economic value," said Minister of LH HanifFaisolNurofiq.
